Installing New Virus Definitions Files ====================================== The following document details the virus definitions update procedures for: * Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95 * Norton AntiVirus 3.0 * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for NetWare * Installing Virus Definitions Files Manually * Intelligent Updater File List TIP: Be aware that there are now two different versions of Intelligent Updater with different filenames! Read the section below for more details. If you are receiving this update on disk, the Intelligent Updater program file is located on disk one. All other update files are located on disk two. ===================================================================== Intelligent Updater ===================================================================== As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent Updater to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new virus definitions files automatically. All you have to do is run the program, then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton AntiVirus version. For Intelligent Updater versions designed for floppy distribution, the Intelligent Updater program file is located on your virus definitions update disk one. The program name, which changes from month to month, uses the following form: mmDSKyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year. Versions of Intelligent Updater that are too large to fit on floppies are named with the form: mmNAVyy.EXE For example, 08DSK97a.EXE is the name of the definitions update that is distributed on floppies. Both 08DSK97a.EXE and 08NAV97a.EXE are available for download, to allow flexibility in updating many computers at one site. ===================================================================== Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95 ===================================================================== Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 1.0 for Windows 95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must update it using the NAV 95.0b patch or upgrade to version 2.0. As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming regularity, the NAV virus definitions files have grown in size to counter the latest threats. Applying this patch will ensure that your installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest) virus definitions files. Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 can cause false detections when the new virus definitions are installed. This latest patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large volumes) and will be required to apply the August 1997 virus definitions set. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95 do not require anti- virus engine updates at this time. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, copy this file to a temporary directory and execute it to extract the necessary files. Then click Setup to begin the installation process. The NAV 95.0b patch contains the October 1996 virus definition set. You must apply the latest virus definitions set update (for example, 08NAV97a.EXE) after completing the program update. NAV950B.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files updates are normally found. It is available for download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.
